In today’s world finding balance is a constant struggle. Holistic wellness offers us a path toward inner harmony and total well-being – nurturing not just our bodies but also our minds and souls.

I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride with wellness throughout my adult life. Dealing with anxiety, depression, burnout, and chronic illness, I became borderline obsessed with finding solutions. I tried everything from pharmaceutical pills to hopping on the latest fad diets.

But guess what? None of these “quick fixes” really changed my life in the long run. As I came to realize, no single thing can really improve your life.

Why? Because everything is connected.

You could be physically fit, but if you’re constantly stressed, it’s bound to mess up your health, mood, and your overall well-being.

Or perhaps you’re spiritually connected, but you’re not giving your body the nourishing food it needs – which can totally zap your energy levels and wreck your sleep.

The turning point for me was when I started making positive changes in every aspect of my life. I went all-in and created nourishing self-care routines, embraced a healthier mindset, and deepened my spiritual connection.

That’s when the magic truly happened. I set off an upward spiral of health and well-being. 

That’s why I’m super passionate about holistic wellness. It’s the only approach that has worked wonders for me in creating lasting health.

Holistic wellness is all about seeing the big picture of our well-being. It connects the dots between our mind, body, and soul to achieve better overall health.

This approach to health isn’t anything new – it’s rooted in ancient healing practices such as Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and Indigenous healing methods.

Unlike modern health approaches that often focus only on treating symptoms, holistic wellness tries to find the underlying cause of any health issues. 

By understanding how our mental clarity, physical health, and spiritual connection work together, we can take charge of our health on a much deeper level.

To achieve holistic wellness, we can do things like mindful exercises, practicing self-care, eating a nutritious diet, staying active, managing stress, and tending to our emotional and spiritual needs. 

However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to achieving holistic wellness because each person’s needs and goals are unique.

The Foundations of Holistic Wellness

Holistic wellness is a comprehensive approach that takes into account three fundamental areas deeply connected to our overall well-being. These key aspects contribute to a balanced and fulfilled life:

Mental Wellness 

Mental wellness is all about keeping our minds in a good place. It means finding a healthy balance in life that promotes mental and emotional health. This includes being able to manage stress, being mindful of your thoughts, dealing with any anxiety or sadness we might feel, and focusing on creating a positive mindset.

Physical Wellness

Taking care of our bodies is important for overall wellness. This means living a healthy and active lifestyle. Eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and showing some self-care to our bodies are essential for feeling our best. 

Spiritual Wellness 

Spiritual wellness is about nurturing our spiritual growth. It doesn’t necessarily have to be connected to any religion. It’s about finding ways to nurture our spirit and soul. This can include things like meditation, being part of a spiritual community, or spending time in nature to feel connected to something greater than ourselves. It’s also about finding a sense of purpose in our lives.

When you embrace a holistic lifestyle that takes all aspects of your health into account, you’ll open the door to many life-transforming benefits. Here are some of the benefits you can expect:

Mind —

  1. Practice mindfulness: Take a few minutes throughout the day for mindful breathing exercises to center yourself. Also, try to be fully present in simple tasks like eating or walking, which helps you connect with the world around you.

  2. Positive mindset:  Work on your personal growth by reading self-help books or listening to podcasts that inspire a positive mindset. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, not as failures.

  3. Gratitude practice: Boost your mood by expressing gratitude. Use a gratitude journal, like The Five Minute Journal, or send heartfelt thank-you notes to appreciate the good things in your life.

  4. Daily meditation: Set aside some time each day for meditation, even if it's just a few minutes. It can do wonders for your mental and emotional well-being. You can use guided meditation apps, such as Headspace, or online videos to help you get started. 

  5. Keep your mind sharp: Play brain games and puzzles regularly to keep your brain sharp. Also, make a conscious effort to learn something new every day, whether it’s a new word, a historical fact, or a skill. 

  6. Journal: Keeping a journal can be a great tool to process your thoughts and emotions. Experiment with different journaling techniques, such as freewriting, goal setting, or stream-of-consciousness writing, to find what resonates with you.

Body —

  1. Fitness & Exercise: Create a balanced exercise routine that includes cardio, strength training, and stretching. Find physical activities you enjoy, like dancing, hiking, or yoga, to stay motivated.

  2. Eat healthy: Focus on eating whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats. Plan and prepare meals ahead of time to avoid unhealthy choices when you're in a rush. While it’s okay to treat yourself occasionally, try to limit processed and sugary foods as much as possible.

  3. Get quality sleep: Stick to a regular sleep schedule (even on weekends) to regulate your body’s internal clock and improve your sleep quality. Create a calming bedtime routine, such as reading a book or taking a warm bath, to help you wind down. Make sure your sleep environment is comfy, dark, quiet, and at a cool temperature to promote better sleep.  

  4. Stay hydrated: Carry a reusable water bottle and sip water regularly to stay hydrated and feeling your best. If plain water doesn’t appeal to you, try adding slices of fruit to add some flavor.

  5. Body awareness: Body awareness is all about tuning in and listening to your body’s signals. Pay attention to how you feel, both physically and emotionally. Notice any tension, pain, or discomfort, and take a moment to understand what might be causing it. 

  6. Spend time outdoors: Spend time outdoors daily to enjoy the fresh air and sunlight, which can improve your mood and boost vitamin D production. Outdoor activities like walking, hiking, and gardening can be a great way to combine physical activity with the benefits of fresh air and sun exposure.


Soul —

  1. Connect with nature: Start your day with a peaceful walk or meditation in nature. Being in the natural world can help you connect to something greater than yourself.

  2. Higher self-meditation: Meditation can help you develop a deeper connection with your higher self, the wiser aspect of you. Find a quiet space, take deep breaths, and set your intention to connect with your higher self. Seek insights and answers to your questions. With practice, you’ll strengthen your connection to your higher self and its wisdom.

  3. Spiritual growth: Create some time to read spiritual books, watch videos, and take time for self-reflection on life's big questions. What’s truly important to you and what really makes you happy? 

  4. Join a spiritual community: Seek out groups or places where you can discuss spiritual topics and connect with like-minded individuals. Being part of a community can be really fulfilling. 

  5. Shadow work: Dedicate time for shadow work and self-reflection to understand and heal suppressed emotions and aspects of yourself. Journal about what thoughts, emotions, or experiences come up. Be compassionate to yourself as you confront and work through your shadow aspects. 

  6. Create a vision board: Gather images and quotes that resonate with your aspirations and create a vision board to inspire your journey. You can use either a large physical board or a digital app like Pinterest. Display the vision board in a prominent spot where you’ll see it daily. Regularly update the board as your aspirations evolve.
